The main reason for gum inflammation (gingivitis) and supportive tissue of the tooth (periodontitis) is the plaque, which consists of millions of toxic harmful bacteria that may cause gum pockets, tooth movement, or even teeth loss. There are two types of gum treatment, surgical treatment and non-surgical treatment, and the choice between them depends on damage of the gums. The main objectives of gum treatment are to remove the plaque, reduce of swelling and reduce the depth of periodontal pockets so avoiding worsening of the gum condition. Cosmetic gum surgery also plays a big role in drawing a perfect smile on the face, and is made to repair or correct excess gum problems, improves appearance of irregular gum shape, as well as problems with receding gums and is performed under local anesthesia.

WILL TREATMENT BE UNCOMFORTABLE?

The interconnecting wires are tightened at each visit, bearing mild pressure on the brackets to shift teeth or jaws gradually into a desired position. Your teeth and jaws may feel slightly sore after each visit, but the discomfort is brief. Keep in mind also that some teeth may need to be extracted to make room for teeth being shifted with braces and for proper jaw alignment.

DO I HAVE TO AVOID ANY FOODS OR PERSONAL HABITS ?

Yes. Cut down on sweets and fizzy drinks. Sugary and starchy foods generate acids and plaque that can cause tooth decay and promote gum disease. Cut healthy, hard foods like carrots or apples into smaller pieces. Sticky, chewy sweets like toffees can cause wire damage and loosen brackets. Avoid hard and crunchy snacks that can break braces, including popcorn, nuts and hard sweets.

WHAT ABOUT HOME CARE OF MY TEETH WITH BRACES ?

With braces, oral hygiene is more important than ever. Braces have tiny spaces where food particles and plaque get trapped. Brush carefully after every meal with fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Rinse thoroughly and check your teeth in the mirror to make sure they're clean. Take time to floss between braces and under wires with the help of floss. Have your teeth cleaned every six months to keep your gums and teeth healthy. Insufficient cleaning while wearing braces can cause enamel staining around brackets or bands.

What is a root canal treatment ?

Root canal treatment is the removal of infected or inflamed pulp from the inside of the tooth. The pulp is removed from the crown and the roots of the tooth. Pulp is the soft tissue inside the crown and roots of teeth containing nerves and blood vessels. Once an infected or inflamed pulp is removed, the tooth can function normally and usually be retained indefinitely.

What happens during a root canal treatment ?

Your dentist will take an x-ray of the tooth and the area around it. The tooth will then be numbed (an injection) with a local anesthetic. All tooth decay will be removed. The dentist will gain access to the pulp chamber of the tooth and remove the pulp from the crown and roots. The root canals are cleaned and completely sealed with a filling material to prevent further infection. Root canal treatment may be completed over several appointments. Following the root canal treatment, the tooth will be restored with a strong filling material or crown.
